Showing Up

Can you see me seeing myself? In the reflection in my blue light blocking glasses that is. But then again, that question provokes some thought. We constantly hear and see people tell others “I see you”. Although that validation is great coming from others, how often are we validating ourselves first? Doesn’t it truly matter more that we ourselves are proud of the person we are and proud of the accomplishments we’re achieving? Should it really matter how many other people “see us”? Think about it though, and let me know who you’re showing up for. You, or them? –@sheiladawn85

About a month ago, I shared the above post on my personal Instagram account and I want to take the time to elaborate.

What does it mean to be seen?  Often times, we as individuals desire to be seen where we are, in order to step into a new light and be seen even more.  We desire validation that what we’re doing, is valued.  However, I want to challenge you to allow yourself to provide that validation to yourself.  See yourself and provide your own validation that what you’re doing is valued, because you value it.  Why does it matter so much that other people find value in what you’re doing?  Are you not doing what you love?  Then why does it mean so much for other people to love it too?

I’m not suggesting that you should be full of yourself and boast about what you’re providing this world.  Humility is vital, but you yourself should be proud of yourself in all that you do!  I understand that there is fulfillment in knowing others value what it is that you provide to the world, but I’m simply suggesting that you make an attempt to be content with knowing you provide value even if you are the only one that let’s you know you’re valued, just don’t forget to tell yourself!

The slogan “show up” has so many connotations if you truly think about it beyond the surface level.  Doing the hard things that no-one ever gets to see.  The hard work behind the scenes.  The “grind”. Showing up isn’t just stepping into the light to be seen.  Yes, it is important to still show up for yourself, even if you’re not as prepared as you think you should be, allowing yourself to be seen in a vulnerable position has a lot of power!  To me, showing up means just that… being vulnerable and allowing yourself to be seen even when the picture isn’t the prettiest!

Who’s setting the standard on how pretty the picture should be before it’s ready to be seen?  If it’s your passion, then you’re the judge.  So why do you keep using unrealistic and unobtainable standards to judge the “readiness” of your work?  I’m saying all of this not just to you reading this, but to myself mostly!  It took me far too long to think this project was “ready” to launch and in reality, it’s only ready the moment you start.

So start that project you’ve been dreaming about for the past few years, few months, heck even the past few days.  Just start!  Don’t be afraid it won’t work, because guess what if it doesn’t, so what!  Try again some other way, or try something completely different.  Don’t be so hard on yourself, just SHOW UP, for YOU… not “them”!
