Sometimes the things we call “overreactions,” avoidance, people-pleasing, shutting down, or staying constantly busy began as ways of protecting ourselves.

Instead of judging yourself for these patterns, try approaching them with curiosity.

What might this part of me be trying to protect me from?

As you reflect, consider:

  • When I feel anxious or overwhelmed, what do I tend to do automatically?
  • What situations make me want to avoid, withdraw, shut down, or take control?
  • What am I afraid might happen if I say no or set a boundary?
  • Is this response helping me with what is happening now, or is it connected to something I learned in the past?
  • What does my body seem to be telling me when I feel unsafe, overwhelmed, or emotionally flooded?
  • What would it look like to respond to myself with curiosity instead of criticism?

You don’t have to change the pattern today.

Sometimes healing begins with simply noticing:

“There is a reason I learned to respond this way—and I can learn new ways to care for myself, too.”

October Affirmation:
“I allow myself to set healthy, honest and open boundaries around me. The right people respect and honor me more because of them.”
