Anger Transformation Workshop

FAQs

I’m not sure where to start. Where do I begin?
Start with connection. It might feel counterintuitive to build more connection with your child or teen, particularly if they feel like they are getting under your skin, but this is how we make change. Connected adults can influence and coach kids. Start there. Then, choose one thing where you want to break a pattern and work on that with just one technique from the workshop.

I’m here to learn about how to regulate my kids… why are we talking about parents’ self-regulation?
We know from research that kids come into the world dysregulated, and self-regulation is a learned skill. We also know that one of the ways kids learn this skill is by watching us and leaning on us.

What if my kid is older, younger, X age? Will this still work?
The interventions and ideas in this workshop are universal concepts! The concepts will work for any age as long as you modify the language and context to speak to the age group with which you’re working.

What if my kid is totally resistant?
I like to think about who I’m most willing to take advice from. It’s usually someone who I feel really connected to. When I don’t feel in sync or connected to someone, I might not be open to receiving suggestions from them. In the same way, before our kids open up to us and try something we’re suggesting, we need to be in a place of connection. They need to feel like we’re on their side. (You can insert ideas of how to make that happen.) Then, you can try 1 thing. You can either bring it up explicitly outside the moment, model the technique, or both.

My kid just says, “I don’t know,” when I ask them questions.
Sometimes, our kids truly don’t know what’s going on in their inner world. They need our help to decode what they’re going through. You can try something like: “I’m going to take some guesses at what might be going on, you can put your thumb up for yes, to the side for maybe, or down for no.” Modify the language in this technique based on age.

Can I get the slides?
I don’t provide slides, but I do have something that I think is better because it’s more actionable: worksheets. I’ve put together some worksheets of the key interventions from this workshop, and I’ll be emailing those (handing them out) after the event. These worksheets are not exhaustive, but they are great for building momentum.

Do these techniques work with neurodivergent kids?
Absolutely. These techniques have been used successfully with neurodivergent kids over the years. Of course, some techniques may need modification, chunking, or language adjustments.

How do I learn more?
